Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis, a natural state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, to help individuals address various psychological, emotional, or behavioural challenges. During hypnotherapy, a trained therapist guides the person into a deeply relaxed state, sometimes referred to as a trance, where the conscious mind becomes less active, and the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions
Purpose: It is used to address issues like stress, anxiety, phobias, chronic pain, smoking cessation, weight management, sleep disorders, and trauma. It can also enhance self-confidence, focus, and motivation.
Process:
• Induction: The therapist helps the individual enter a relaxed state using calming language, guided imagery, or progressive relaxation techniques.
• Suggestion: While in the trance-like state, the therapist introduces positive affirmations or suggestions to help reframe thoughts, emotions, or behaviors.
• Awakening: The individual is gradually guided back to full awareness, feeling refreshed and in control.
How It Works: Hypnotherapy aims to bypass the critical conscious mind to access the subconscious, where deeply ingrained beliefs, habits, and emotions reside. By doing so, it allows the person to adopt healthier perspectives or behaviours.
Safety: Hypnotherapy is generally safe and non-invasive. It requires a willing participant, as individuals cannot be hypnotized against their will or made to act against their values.
Misconceptions: Unlike stage hypnosis often seen in entertainment, hypnotherapy is a legitimate therapeutic practice. Individuals remain aware and in control during the session.
